Help To Write Your Homeschool Education Plan (QLD)

Are you in a panic about writing your first education plan for HEU (Home Education Unit) registration?

If so, you’re not alone! Before I began my first education plans, I felt like preparing them would be such an overwhelming task. It turns out it wasn’t. I was able to get approved with a simple three page education plan created on a Microsoft Word doc, and I’ll show you how today. Hopefully this information will take the stress out of the process for you.

Facebook group help

First up, I’d like to share how I began researching what was needed for the education plan. Apart from the Department of Education website, I searched the relevant Facebook homeschool groups for information using their search functions. These groups offer wonderful support. If you’re on Facebook, they are really worth joining. After browsing some templates across these groups, I had a pretty good idea of what I needed to do. I wrote and submitted a basic three page education plan per child. To my delight, both of my children were approved for home education without any requests for further details. I’ll share this template with you shortly.

What is the HEU (Home Education Unit) looking for?

I think it’s helpful to remember that the HEU isn’t your enemy. You’re sure to meet people who have a different opinion on this though. In my experience, the HEU simply want to see that you have a proper plan to educate your child, and that you will provide the resources required to facilitate that learning.

Personally, I appreciate having to submit the plan. It forces me to sit down and really flesh out the goals I want my children to reach for the year, and how we’re going to get there. Below you can see the HEU requirements for the education plan/program.down arrow

The education plan is flexible

Before I share my template, I have to share something really important. Please know that your plan can be adjusted throughout the year based on what happens. You are not completely chained to what you write at the start of the year. Maybe you’re really excited to start a new history curriculum, for example, but it simply doesn’t work out for your kids and they hate it. It’s okay, you can change it up. Perhaps your child goes to a co-op that collapses, and you’ve listed that co-op in your plan as the place where your child will do sport and art. You can just explain what happened, and then show how you covered those parts of your curriculum in different ways.

In the 2024 template I’m sharing below, I have already changed a number of items in my plan. I found something better and decided to swap. I bought a new video based writing curriculum that my girls absolutely love this term. We also decided to go with geography workbooks rather than printouts from Twinkl.

You’ll just need to explain why the changes to the education plan were made in your end of year reporting. It’s no drama.

My three page education plan template

Now, without further ado, here is my education plan template which has served me well for two years. I hope it helps you to see that you don’t need anything super fancy. down arrow
