The Wayfinders Book Club FAQ

Along with you, I wish it wasn’t necessary to do so. Due to the world we find ourselves raising children in, it is necessary. Why? Children’s literature, and the wider world, are saturated in this content. I believe if we shut our children off completely from these themes in the middle grade reading years, it’s worse. Why? Because the themes often remain relatively mild in middle grade books. We can begin applying God’s word in an age-appropriate way. Once our kids start reading teen content, we are in a completely different level of inappropriate. If the conversations start in the 9-12 age range, our kids can begin to build discernment. They’ll know when a book is going too far and needs to be put away. It’s shifting from shielding to equipping, so our children have the tools to make wise decisions about what they fill their minds with in this increasingly ungodly world they must grow up in.

We ensure that every book chosen is available in an easy to purchase e-book or hard copy version. Many of the books may even be available in your public library, or on the ebook app of your library.

I am a born again Christian, who loves Jesus. if I had to describe my theogical persuasions in a nutshell, I would have to say reformed. I love worshipping and meeting with all kinds of Christians with different theological persuasions in different denominations. But I always find myself more at home in Presbyterian or Reformed church settings. Why? Because I find they consistently hold a high view of God’s word, and the importance of holiness and obedience. Jesus tells us, “If you love me, you will obey my commands,” so it seems pretty important to me to know God’s word in order to do so!

A very important question! I have several years of teaching experience as a language teacher with a master degree from Griffith University. I ran a language school for children in South Korea for two and a half years. Lessons were taught face-to-face an online.  During this time, I researched how to teach phonics and had great success with motivated learners. As a homeschool mum, I have also taught both of my own children to read. They are now capable and avid readers.
That is why I am truly baffled by the rates of illiteracy in my home country of Australia.
Reading bought me so much joy as a child, and I can see that in my children’s lives as well. I hope the Weekly Read-Along Zoom Book Club will assist children to grow their love of reading and reading skills.
