People can get stressed about the process, but you really don’t need to. This post is here to help! I’ll take you through step by step with images from the government website. I’ll also show you what documents the HEU will send to you after your application is sent through.
Different States Will Have Different Rules.
Seeing as each state has different requirements, I just want to emphasize that this information is about registration in the state of Queensland.
Also, if you are looking for information about the education plan section in particular, you can find that here – https://joyfuljourney123.com/help-to-write-your-homeschool-education-plan/
In that post, I provide info on what to share in the education plan, and provide an easy template to follow. This time, we’ll only focus on the overall application process. So, let’s begin.
Applying to the HEU (Home Education Unit) Online.
The easiest way to apply is online through the Department of Education portal.
You can find it here: https://education.qld.gov.au/schools-educators/other-education/home-education/registration
There is also a paper form application if you need it.
This is what the home screen should look like ~
When you apply, you will need to make a separate application for each child you are registering. There is no family registration option.
Before you begin, you will want to make sure you have the required documents on hand. See them in the picture below.
Note, you will need to download the declaration, fill it in and sign it.
The first question in the application will ask if it is your first time to fill out the online application form. After you say yes, you will be provided with a return code before you begin the form. It’s best to print this, or jot it down somewhere in case you end up needing to complete the application over more than one session.
Next, you will confirm you are eligible to apply.
From here, you will be required to fill in all of your relevant personal details before it is time to upload the required documents. Including the dreaded education plan! Never fear. I will provide guidance about the education plan in the next post. It’s really not as scary as it seems.
Provisional Approval
After you complete your application, you will receive your provisional approval shortly after. It will look like this ~
In this provisional approval, you will be instructed to commence teaching your child according to your education plan as you wait for full registration.
Fully Approved Registration Application
Once your application has been fully approved, you will receive a friendly letter congratulating you, along with a registration certificate. You are now finished communicating with the HEU until it is time to report your learning year and submit your new education plan in about 9 months. In Queensland, at this point in time, there are no home visits or follow-ups inbetween applying and reporting.
This is, of course, a very exciting day!
